Has the photographer ever photographed a wedding? If so, they should be very willing to share samples with you. If not, they should be willing to show samples of their photography style with you and should be knowledgeable of what should be photographed at a wedding and the general flow of the day/ceremony.
Will the photographer meet with you in person? A wedding photography consultation should always be complimentary. A photographer should be more than willing to set down with you, discuss your big day, all the details, get to know you and discuss what you are looking for in a photographer and exactly what YOU want. A professional appearance is also very important. Do not hesitate to ask a photographer how they dress when they photography a wedding. You do not want your photographer to be the center of attention.
Are you personalities compatible? Is the photographer you meet someone you can get along with? Do you have the same vision?
What is their photographic style? Today there are so many different styles of photography 'finshes' to choose from. From vintage to modern and everything in-between; the photographers style should reflect the style of finished product you are looking for.
Are they in your price range? Although the last thing you want to do is shop by price, ask your self if this photographer is in your budget. Make sure you understand the cost of everything including prints and albums.
What services and products are offered? Whether it's a la carte or a package, understand what you are getting. Is there any room for changes and will it cost to do so? Sometimes the packages are fixed, sometimes they can be customized. A timeline for product deliver should also be discussed
What about a contract? A contract should protect your interest as well as the photographers. It is very important that you understand the details of the contract. Make sure all the services your are purchasing are listed in the contract and agreed to by all parties .Make sure that you have no doubts before signing. Read it ALL.
What about deposits, cancellations and payments? This information should be discussed in person and stated in the contract. Be prepared to pay a photographer a deposit at the time of booking . This reserves your date. The deposit amount varies between photographers. Does the photographer offer a payment plan or require payment in full at the time of contract signing? Be sure to ask about the cancellation policy. It should cover what happens in the case of client and/or photographer cancellations.
Are references provided? A personal reference is always the best and people love to talk. Ask your photographer for a list of references and personally call them yourself. A photographer who is unwilling to give your their references man not be the person that you need to hire.
These are just a few areas to think about when looking for a photographer for you wedding. It is also a good idea to keep a running list of questions you would like to ask and list of poses you are interested in. You may even consider creating a board on Pintrest devoted to your wedding and sharing this with your photographer as well.
