What to Wear for Family Portraits

Fall is such a beautiful time of year...the weather is cooler, colors are brighter and the light in the late afternoon at the 'golden hour' can simply take your breath away. Fall is also a great time to update your family portraits.

Location. Location. Location.

The location you choose for your family portrait is very important. You can choose a location 'just for the fun of it' or choose a spot that has a special meaning to you, or somewhere that reflects who you and your family are. If you are not sure where to have your portraits taken, consult with your photographer. They should have a few favorite locations to suggest.

What NOT to wear!!

I am always asked "What do I need to wear for my portrait session?". I have a session information list that I like to send to clients and one of the first things I mention in the list is 'What Not To Wear'. Here is the rundown:
  • solid white shirts
  • wild logos on shirts
  • matching clothing for everyone in the group
  • dirty shoes
  • clothes that are too tight or too baggy
  • shinny metallic or sequins
  • colors that will blend into your locations background
  • new hairstyle/color you got yesterday (give yourself at least a week between a new style/color and your portrait session)
  • too much jewelry
  • sleeveless shirt
  • leather (unless it is part of your everyday style)
  • low cut necklines
  • see-through clothing (I do not do boudoir photography)
  • wrinkled clothing
  • dirty fingernails
  • too much makeup
  • unkempt facial hair
  • character tee shirt for children (Dora, super hero, Barbie etc...)
What TO wear...

  • coordinate your families clothing (choose at least 3 different colors to work with)
  • different tones of the same colors
  • colors the compliment each other
  • layers (scarves, jackets, hats, sunglasses)
  • clean shoes
  • season appropriate clothing
  • clothing to reflect your personality (if you are vibrant and out going bright colors may be your choice)
  • clothes that fit properly
  • classic or timeless pieces

Your family portraits should look good today and 20 years in the future...not dated by what you are wearing.

Make it Special...

Your family portrait should reflect your family. This is a photograph that will be hanging on your wall for everyone to see. If your family has an activity they like to share together try to incorporate it into your session. The same goes for family heirlooms.

Put it all together...

More goes into a family portrait session than just making the appointment and showing up on time. A lot of your thought and time go into planning your family portraits.  Just remember that you are not alone.

When you book your family portrait session be sure to ask for a consultation with your photographer if one is not offered. Your photographer can make suggestions to help you along the way to make the planning process easier for you.

Most important of all...

Have fun! Your family is together all at one time. For some, that is an amazing event in itself.
